'Hatch
Madness' - April 2010 News -March Browns, Blue Wings and Caddis
Bugs of the Month-

Tips
of the Month...
1)
March Browns are clingers. They live in riiffles. Blue Wing Olives are
swimmers. They live in boulder strewn runs!
2)
Caddis hatches can be perplexing. There are multiple phases of the hatch
that can be of importance to the trout's diet. To summarize, I have
listed the stages below;
--->
Pre emergence
---> Emergence (both sub surface and in the surface film)
---> Egg Laying
---> Spent
The
Caddis life cycle represents a complete metamorphisis similar to that
of a Butterfly. In contrast, the Mayfly is an incomplete metamorphisis.
The complexity of a metamorphosis cycle adds many variables to the stages
of the Caddis hatch. One of my favorite stages of a Caddis hatch is
the 'Spent' phase. This is the last stage... the Caddis has already
emerged and perpetuated the species and is in its final leg of life.
The Caddis falls to the water and will soon die and is basically 'Spent'.
Learning
to fish all stages of a Caddis hatch will make you a better angler as
Caddis are an integral part of most rivers biomass. There are over 800
types of Caddis....Wow!
The
Yakima
fishing recently
has been quite good during the afternoon. Casting
to rising fish with March Brown and Blue Wing patterns has been
the game plan. Prior to the hatch, the fishing has been a bit spotty
but certainly worthy. Post hatch has been more reliable then pre hatch.
'Caddis
Madness'
special on The Yakima - We predict the 2010 Mother's Day Caddis Hatch
to be game on, just like the March Browns and Blue Wings are currently.
Typically low water/snow pack years are good to great Caddis, PMD and
Salmon Fly action on the Yakima. Between May 1 and May 15th we are going
to offer a full day of fishing for $345.00 total - Flies, lunch, all

Up
River Bright Chinook!
May 17th - 28th
The third and fourth week in May we will be offering a new trip for
'Upriver Bright Springers'. The cool thing about these Chinook is that
they are BRIGHT, fresh, strong and great to eat. We
will be fishing multiple locations within 45 minutes of The Ranch.
You
will only be able to land one out of six. Bring a 10-12 weight and hold
on. The numbers of fish this year are going to be great. We will run
the program from The Ranch. Two nights and two days of fishing for $550
each. One night and one day of fishing for $295 each. Call Jack @ 509.773.3460
or 509.859.2280
Rods and Reels provided if needed!

The
Cool Factor...
Paul
Anderson - New
to the guide staff. Paul has probably forgot more then most have learned,
but he wouldn't tell you that. His early years were spent chasing trout
in the desert lakes with Paul Lasha. Paul Lasha, while not an every
day common name in the fly fishing world, was instrumental in some of
the most innovative fly pattern developments for lake fishing in the
early days. Anderson feels at home on both rivers and lakes. We are
excited to have Paul on the crew.....Just watch what happens down at
'The Ranch' this season. Combining our knowledge with Paul's knowledge
will add a world class twist to 'The Ranch'

Definitely a new age fly fishing publication
with a whole new perspective.
The
Steelhead below was spotted on a day hike (4/11/10) alongside a desert
stream (no wider then 20ft across) The stream is a direct tributary
to the Columbia... how cool is that! My wife and I actually spotted
quite a few more in
the stream that day. The little buck pictured below was a bit on the
'rough condition side' and was about 20 miles up from where the stream
entered the Columbia.
