Fishing Summary and Report
The Spring of 2003 was absolutely
remarkable. After 14 solid years on the river, we would rate
this spring as certainly, "one of the best". Factors
that made this Spring one of the best include:
Sno pack at almost 100%
Literally almost no down time from fishing the river due
to spring run-off
The Spring Hatch's were great- Hatch synopsis:
Skwalas-Great to awesome action
beginning Feb 28th
Blue Wings- Great emergences Mid- March
March Browns-Good with regular hatches
Caddis
.Epic
PMD's
.Epic
The river levels this spring were quite low in comparison
to past years. We had an unseasonably warm January where
a large amount of our low lying snow dissipated. Our snow
pack in the higher elevation was substantial but melted
slowly as it was a solid base and not soft. The Teanaway
has been flowing fairly clean while still quite large this
Spring because of the above stated reason. Combine the low
water levels and great Caddis and PMD hatches and no wonder
we had epic "rise fests" for literally two weeks
in the month of May.
Currently, the river levels are at typical
summer flows. These flows do limit the wading angler from
access. On a positive note, these flows do keep the water
temperatures cooler. Most of the large flows we see on the
Yakima during the irrigation season originate from the bottom
fed Cle Elum Reservoir
giving us a cool influx of water
during the heat of summer.
