Fishing Reports with Honorable
Mention (by Greg Lawless)
Feb 28, 2004
The last 40 hours the valley has experienced some dense low
lying fog and the air temps have stayed rather cold over that
period. Water temps have dropped significantly and the fishing
has been average. The Blue Wings have been a no show for the
last two days.....solomente midges. Weather for the next week
is as follows.....
Special mention should be made of expert fly fisherman, Greg
Lawless. Many said, including this author, that a fish could
not be caught on a dry Blue Winged Olive this time of year.
Lawless, with customary bravado, laughed in the face of daunting
odds, and with fingers numbed by the cold, tied on a number
18 BWO and set out after fish in the hole known by most locals
as "Death Trap" due to the quicksand, and trecherous
currents. On his 5th cast, with laser like precision, he presented
a BWO in a manner so natural, that another BWO tried to mate
with it just before it touched the water. Immediately a vicious
snarling brute of a trout grabbed the tasty morsel, and the
battle was on. After an epic battle, the 18 inch trout was
caught and released. I'm not ashamed to admit I asked for
a few tips on the spot. Sure, I've been fishing the Yakima
for 58 years, but I'm not too old (well, I'm almost too old)
to learn another trick or two in this wonderful sport.

Friday, April 2nd fishing report:
River was in great shape, and the weather was terrific. Most
fisherman
saw a few rising to the dry fly, although the bright sun may
have slowed the bite down. Skwalas were the key, although
I did see legendary fisherman, Greg Lawless, on the water
using his Q-Tip fly with success. Greg explained "you
reach a point in your fly fishing career where it just isn't
challenging anymore catching dozens of trophy trout each and
every day. So to make it more fun I invent unusual flies.
Today I am using a Q-Tip skewered with a number 12 barbless
hook. I've only caught 5 or 6 with it, but then I've only
been fishing for half an hour."
Now I've been fishing on this river for over 58 years, but
I can still
use a tip or two on casting. I tend, on the back cast, to
allow too large
a loop, which on a windy day results in me hooking myself
in the ass. Greg saw that I had way too much wrist on the
back cast, and quickly fixed the problem. We all need to be
conscious of the difference a good cast makes in hooking up
with our finny friends.
Fish On!
